Rosalie Montoya is mature muscle’s
woman of the year, 2003.
Eighteen months ago, Rosalie Montoya couldn’t swim,
had never biked and had a handful of serious health problems.
That didn’t stop her from setting a goal to do the 2003
AARP TriUmph Triathlon in Henderson, Nevada. After watching
the 2002 event she decided to do whatever it took to succeed.
Despite asthma, problematic blood sugar and major spinal issues,
Rosalie started from scratch with a goal and a plan. She’s
a competent runner, having qualified and competed in the Boston
Marathon, but she was a terrified non-swimmer and hadn’t
been on any bike as an adult. “When we started this
adventure she would try to swim and simply sink,” said
her exercise physiologist John Zachary. She trained with John
and USAT coach Jackie Arcana, and put in countless hours on
her own. Despite constant setbacks from all quadrants, she
did not give up.
She pressed on to victory. “I was delighted just to
have finished,” said Rosalie. “Winning the age
group was the icing on the cake.” Speaking of icing,
she used cake frosting to sustain her blood sugar and did
well-practiced glucose tests at both transitions, making her
win that much more amazing. “Next season I’ll
be doing more of these AARP events. For the off-season, I’m
back to style and technique work, going easy and taking my
swim and bike to the next level while I enjoy the run.”
We’ll be hearing more from Rosalie, mature muscle’s
woman of the year.
